Cinema under the stars: Sunshine Plaza brings Hollywood to the west

From an Academy Award winning film to everyone’s favourite heartthrob Chris Hemsworth, Sunshine Plaza is bringing the blockbusters to Melbourne’s west with its outdoor cinema in February and March.

Taking advantage of the remaining warm summer nights, the Plaza is inviting locals from Sunshine and surrounds to join them for three evenings of cinematic gems.

Currently undergoing a refresh, the outdoor cinema is just one initiative the Plaza is undertaking in an effort to create the ultimate health and wellbeing precinct, and in turn, help to change the face of Sunshine.

Screening on Saturday 23 February in preparation for Hollywood’s night of nights, Oscar winning Ang Lee film ‘Life of Pi’ is set to captivate audiences, while the action packed ‘Avengers: Infinity War’ will thrill on Friday 1 March.

Meanwhile, on Saturday 2 March dinosaurs are set to take over Sunshine Plaza with the epic ‘Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom’ gracing the big screen.

While the three movies will be a feast for the eyes, stomachs have not been forgotten with popular food cart The Snag Society dishing up the goods, while local Footscray brew pub The Cheeky Pint will supply beer and wine to quench the thirst of the adult movie goers.

Dessert and the kids are not forgotten with frozen yogurt van Yogurddiction on site for the screening of ‘Life of Pi’, while classic movie snacks including popcorn and fairy floss will be available to purchase on the other two evenings.

Speaking on the event, Sunshine Plaza Centre Manager Ian Simpson said the outdoor cinema was an opportunity for the Plaza to bring something unique to the suburb.

“The west often misses out on these types of events, and sometimes people don’t have the opportunity to travel across town to enjoy a night out like this, so with that in mind, we thought let’s bring a classic summer activity to Sunshine and showcase the suburb to locals and visitors.

“Coupled with the fact that it is currently movie award-season, we wanted to provide locals with a fun and affordable night out at the cinema with the bonus of being able to enjoy three incredibly entertaining films, and amazing food and drink,” said Ian.

Beanbags and deckchairs will grace the expansive car park, however, Sunshine Plaza encourages moviegoers to BYO picnic blankets to secure the perfect viewing spot.

Tickets are available now and can be purchased via Eventbrite at a cost of just $12 per adult and $9 per child. Food and beverage prices vary.
